Abstract
The aim of the study was to analyze the
impact of social media on the student’s
academic performance [a study of
students of Eastern University, Sri Lanka].
In an assessment of this purpose a
quantitative survey was carried out among
students atEastern University of Sri
Lanka, using the convenient sampling
technique. There were six selected
variablesused for the purpose of this study
(i) Social Media, (ii) Communication, (iii)
Collaboration, (iv) Coordination (V)
Entertainment and (vi) Socialization.
Research findings shows that a great
number of students in Eastern University
of Sri Lanka, has access to the internet.
There is a significant positive correlation
between SM and AP if the students spend
more time on SM it will help the students
to easily discuss about the study task,
assignment and exams now all type of SM
is easily available and accessible easily.

Introduction
The social media has become one of the
most important communication means in
recent times. However, social networking
exist so as to provide communication
among people regardless of the distance,
making it open to people easily share
information, files and pictures and videos,
create blogs and send messages, and
conduct real-time conversations. These
systems are referred to as social, simply
because they allow communication with
buddies and co- workers so easily and
effectively. It also strengthens the ties
between people of those systems. The

favorite in the realm of internet sites are
Facebook, twitter andothers.
The driving factors for adoption of social
media are the progressively ubiquitous
access, convenience, functionality, and
flexibility of social technologies. It has
been contended that, poor greater
education, social technologies supports
social constructivist techniques to learning
they potentially have to improve students’
construction of understanding and
promote student interaction.
Since the advent of social media sites in
the 1990, it’s assumed in some quarters
that the academic performances of
students are facing a lot of neglect and
challenges. There is a deviation
distractions and divided attention between
social networking activities and their
academic work. It’s observed that students
devote more attention to social media than
they do their studies. Therefore, the
question of this study is out to answer, is
out to social media affect the academic
performance of students of Eastern
university

METHODOLOGY AND
TECHNIQUES
Data & Sampling
The study was conducted among the
students of Eastern University, Sri Lanka.
A sample of 200students was chosen from
4 faculties based on convenient sampling
technique (see Table 1).The type of
research is deductive and variables are
measured with quantitative analysis.
Primary data are collected through
structured questionnaires with closed
statements measured with Likert’sscale
(1-5 as strongly disagree to strongly
agree), based on five popular Social
Medias namely (Face book, Twitter,
YouTube, LinkedIn and WhatsApp).

Univariate analysis
Univariate analysis is carried out for
evaluating the attributes of dimensions
and variables individually based on the
response in the questionnaires. For this
purpose, mean values and standard
deviation of the dimensions and variables
are taken into consideration.

Bivariate analysis
Bivariate analysis used to measure the
magnitude and direction of the
relationship between SM and AP. Here
the correlation and simple regression
analysis was used to identify the
relationship and to find to what extend
social media impact on academic
performance
