Abstract

The Nayaks ruled Tamil Nadu with Madurai, Tanjore and Chenji as their capital in 17th and 18thcenturies. They showed much interest on the growth of architecture.The Nayaks followed Vijayanagar style. In Tamil Nadu, though they were constructed on Dravidian style, the Islamic style which penetrated into it gave new diamesion to them. Many existing temples were expanded with additional Structure, Gopurams, Temples, Palace, Public buildings and Mandapams. The contributions of Viswanatha Nayak, Thirumalai Nayak and Rani Mangammal to the devolpment of art and architecture are more appreciated.
