Abstract
In this paper, the ritual of Ambubashi mela is studied in details- the nature of the mela, its ritual significance and its impact on the social hierarchy. This paper also explores the role of the mela in bringing the Kāmākhyā tradition into the larger context of the Puranic fold. The analyses are based on a study of the Kālikā Purāṇa and the Yoni Tantra. The study is also accentuated by the extensive field work undertaken over a period of three months in the region of Assam.
