Thyroid hormones are essential for normal development and growth of many tissues, including the brain, the skeleton and mental ability. An underactive thyroid produces too little thyroid hormone, ie Thyroxin (T3/T4) resulting in hypothyroidism. The thyroid gland can become enlarged than normal and can be felt under the skin at the front of the neck, known as Goiter which is common in Sub-Himalayan region. Graves’s disease, an autoimmune disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. The condition makes a person’s immune system produce abnormal antibodies, makes the thyroid gland to produce more thyroid hormones. This causes heavy weight loss and loss of appetite.
