Abstract

In the context of government annual budget 2016-17, the concept of doubling farm income by 2022, diversification of crops along with advance innovation in the field of agriculture can be one of the main strategies. Diversification is also considered as a key enabler for achieving sustainability, given the current state of affairs on usage of water, agri- inputs and soil. The present study aims to discuss the unexplored economic opportunities for diversification of agriculture in Bongaigaon district where about 70 % of the population directly or indirectly depending on agriculture and allied sector. The present study also focuses on the challenges faced by most of the poor farmer in course of cultivation. The study also aims to increase rural farmers awareness of the principle of sustainable agriculture in the course of cultivation so that present environment is maintained or better off for future generation. The objective of the study is to highlight the scope of crop diversification on sustainable agriculture development, challenges faced by the farmers, policy adopted by the authority, to provide input for further research in this field.
