Abstract

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign visits have been incomparable with the foreign visits made by his predecessors due to many reasons such as his engagements with Diaspora, business community, industrialists, innovators, political leaders and also with many more unique features. Modi has offered Line of Credit of millions of dollars for various countries for various purposes. Modi has sought assistance from developed countries for Technology, funding and raw materials. On the contrary Modi has offered assistance for capacity building, infrastructure development, education etc to many countries. Gifting antique things, health care equipments, ambulances etc to head of states he met or for the whole nation, were one among those unique features. As on 31st December 2018, Modi has landed over ninety times in foreign Airports. He has covered almost all parts of the world with multiple visits to same country. It is notable that Modi often carried a gift whenever he visited foreign countries for bilateral talks despite whether it is with a developed country or with a developing country. Modi has framed a new way of diplomacy which can be termed as 'Gift Diplomacy' in India’s International Relations. The gift diplomacy conveys India’s culture, tradition and its care for humanity. This paper is aimed to cover the in-depth details of Modi's gift diplomacy while he was the Prime Minister of India from 2014 to 2019. This paper is divided into three sections. The first section is a detailed report on gifts presented by Modi during his foreign visits. Second section is the analysis of the core objectives or essence of Modi's 'Gift Diplomacy' and final section is the conclusion.
