Abstract
Chitin is one of the most abundant polysaccharide present in our surroundings, but it does not pile up due to its breakdown by chitinases. These enzymes are found in organisms such as microbes, insects, plants, and animals and play a diverse role in immunity, host defense and insect morphogenesis. Chitinases have various applications in various fields such as agriculture, human health care, chitinous waste treatment, preparation of pharmaceutically compounds, etc. This review summarizes the occurrence, characteristics, and applications of different types of chitinases.
