Abstract

Mostly, the history of the Indian Freedom struggle had been written about the elite class. The role of agrarian class is ignored or underestimated. British East India Company came to India, made the policies for their benefits and Indian people. The negative effect of these policies was mostly upon Indian peasants. More than 70% of Indian population were from agrarian class. These policies ruined the life of agrarian class. They agitated against these policies, one side they fought for their rights and on the other hand they struggled for the Indian independence. This paperanalyse the legacy of British rule in Punjab and negative impact of these policies with special reference to Canal colonization in Punjab, Land Alienation Act 1900 and Canal Colonization Bill which compelled the peasants of the Punjab to start agitation against these anti-peasant policies. For the freedom struggle of the India, there was a key role of Punjabi peasants who started furious agitations after 1900 and they continuously fought till India got independence.
