Abstract

Diatoms are categorized as phytoplankton’s which are found in water. There are greater than two hundred genera of living diatoms which are estimated and around 100,000 species exist. There are 9 morphologies of diatoms namely, symmetrical biraphid, centric, eunotioid, asymmetrical biraphid, epithemioid, surirelloid, araphid, monoraphid and nitzschioid,.  The most recurrent use of diatoms in forensic science in the case of death due to drowning as well as linking the victim with the crime scene. Since the type of diatoms and assemblage number varies from ecosystem to ecosystem, it is therefore important to have data on type, assemblage of data of the area for the forensic use.
