Abstract
Hypertension is now described as a progressive cardiovascular syndrome. It is an escalating cardiovascular syndrome generally characterized by cardiac and vasculature abnormalities that targets major organs that include heart, brain, kidney which often leads to coronary heart disease, cardiovascular and renal disease. As of 2008, approximately, 28% or 978 million of the population of the world have hypertension. It is estimated that by 2025 hypertensive patients worldwide will increase to more than 1.56 billion. A novel approach to cure cardiovascular diseases particularly hypertension is the involvement of sigma receptors. The sigma receptor and its ligands have been implicated in a myriad of cellular functions, biological processes and diseases.
