Abstract

Ground water contamination by heavy metals has been a major problem in north eastern parts like west
Bengal, Assam, Orissa and Punjab in INDIA. The heavy metals are toxic in nature and are normally non
biodegradable . The impact of heavy metal pollution on the biosphere plays an active role concerned with
bioaccumulation. Among the numerous anthropogenic contaminants emitted and deposited into the
environment, Cadmium is an important heavy metal pollutan t that affects major physiological processes
like respiration. In order to solve the existing problem scientists and engineers have to come forward to
generate cost effective technologies that include use of live plants (Phytoremediation), biomaterial or
b iomass to clean polluted areas. The aim of this research paper is to treat polluted water with heavy
metals by using biomaterial and phytoremediation.
