Abstract

Electrical discharge machining is a non-traditional method for material extraction. Removal of material takes place without any contact between the workpiece and the tool. Conductive materials that possess high hardness and difficult to machine can be machined by electric discharge machining. Deep, intricate and precise shapes can be produced using spark erosion. Spark is generated between the submerged cutting copper tool and component, which further transforms into a plasma channel. However, this process faces some challenges regarding low MRR, surface roughness, and tool wear. Researchers have developed some means to reduce the impact of these parameters on the machining method, such as a tool made by powder metallurgy and cryogenic operation of workpiece and tool. This paper reviews the research work done in the field of EDM tool made by powder metallurgy, cryo-treatment of tool, the effect of process parameters on machining and optimum parameter setting for best response characteristics.
