Abstract

The Mc-Cabe Thiele method is a graphical approximation which is considered as a very basic & simple technique. This technique is mainly used for providing the detailed information related to the refining (distillation) processes which involve the determination of theoretical stages of the action & separation of the mixture from the desired composition. In chemical engineering, this method also helps in understanding of the fume-fluid (vapor-liquid) equilibrium phenomena which involved in distillation process. The McCabe-Thiele method is in widespread use because of its accuracy & easy visualization. In this paper, we designed a GUI for McCabe-Thiele method using MATLAB functions & GUIDE TOOL to visualize the process of calculating the required number of trays for particular composition. The data required for estimating the number of trays will be feed mole fraction, feed quality (which is usually 1), reflux ratio, relative volatility, bottom mole fraction (i.e. bottom product) and refining mole fraction (i.e. top product). Both bottom product and top product will be decided on the basis of desired composition. Thus, this method is proved very efficient to calculate the required number of plates (trays).
