Abstract
Of all West African novelists, it is Achebe who has emphasized the utilitarian value of art in his writings and pronouncements. He states candidly that he is a committed writer and that his novels are influenced by his political ideology. All his novels have either been a proof or a prophecy of the stress and strain in Nigeria’s march towards independence, through early years of democracy and through the rigorous military regime. Being a talented writer, Achebe goes beyond mere story telling. He makes us reflect on our lives and on the history of humanity. It is his political ideology and its evolution through the historical phases of his country that render uniqueness to Achebe’s novels. One can notice the novelist growing logically from a teacher to a critic and critic to a reformer.
