Abstract

The Ramayana is an ancient Sanskrit epic. It is not just a story; it has a philosophical, spiritual significance and a deep truth in it. It teaches and preaches morality, spirituality, dharma, values, codes of conduct. The Ramayana is a splendid creation which transcends the limitations of time and place. The Ramayana is a part of world literature. It has deeply and richly nourished the Indian generations time after time. It is the foundation of Indian Culture and Civilization. This work has a universal appeal. The Ramayana is neither an “Itihasa”, nor “Purana” but is an “Adikavya” - the first poem, which reflects human behaviour, ways of thinking. The Ramayana is a living force which symbolizes ethical living.
