Abstract

 This study examines the socio-economic and psychological impact of armed conflict on widows and half-widows in Kashmir. Published books and research articles have been utilised for the study. The study reveals that the widows and half-widows since 1989 bear witness to the fact that they continue to suffer immensely due to the death of their husbands or disappearance. When they lost/disappeared their life partner, are often deprived of support from traditional sources, which can cause economic hardship or deprivation. In many cases, half-widows and widows leave or forced to leave in-law’s home. They are compelled to face the difficulties and insecurity such as limited choice of remarriage, gender division of labour, limiting job opportunities and pitiable economic support. The widows and half-widows labelled as mothers of disappeared sons, wives of militants, women victims of physical abuse, women heads of households, etc.
