Abstract

Indian economy is predominately an agrarian economy. Agriculture sector is amalgamation of farming and livestock. Livestock is integral part of rural India as this is not only a source of income but also a livelihood. It provides a regular supplementary income and employment not only to millions of producers in the rural areas but also to a large number of people engaged in secondary and tertiary activities related to livestock business. It is an important occupation and a source of family income for large number of women in the rural areas. Women from millions of households in the country tend to rear cows and buffaloes at home while their husbands toil in the fields (Kurien, 2004). Besides, it generates employment for landless labour also.
