Abstract

Language learning strategies have created a great deal of controversy over the years. It is predictable that learners face many difficulties in learning a foreign language. To overcome these language obstacles, they need to utilize language learning strategies. These strategies are designed to raise awareness about strategies, to train learners in strategy use, to give them opportunities to practice strategy use and to encourage them to personalize these strategies for themselves. We also allow learners to choose their strategies and do so spontaneously, without continued prompting from the language teacher. The teacher is expected to bring these strategies to the attention of learners regardless of the subject matter.  This includes encouraging students who already exhibit the use of these strategies so that others might 'notice' and imitate them.
