Abstract

the Araya Woman is the first novel to be written by a person belonging to an indigenous tribe in Kerala. The writer Mr. Narayan, is from the Malarayarar community that inhabits the hills of the Western Ghats in central Kerala and is presently a postal employee in Ernakulum. His novel, which was written originally in the Malayalam language in 1998 was translated into English by Catherine Thankamma and published almost ten years later in 2010.It was translated into Hindi in 2009, titled Phaadin. The novel is about the tribal community or adivasis as they are called. This is a novel of about 207 pages which has been by a Malayarayar himself, who wished to tell the world about his community because it was being misrepresented by in popular culture. The novel uses the framework of a story in order to mediate the culture, ethos and sociology of this tribal community which is almost on the verge of losing its identity and ethnicity in the modernization drive of twentieth- century- India, particularly Kerala.
