Abstract

The industrial revolution took place in Europe which further motivated the European powers to initiate a trade with the African and Asian countries to earn more and more profits. The British East India Company took initiative to expand its trade in Asia in general and Indian subcontinent particularly. They started exhausting the natural resources available for them in the colonies for their own benefits. In the Indian context, the interrelationship between the social and cultural institutions and the agricultural activities, the use of forest and water resources, suggests that the colonial period displays a separation from the pre-colonial period.[1]The initial industry introduced in the colonial period in India was the plantation industry. It was the beginning of European exploitation of Indian resources. The British encouraged indigo, jute, tea and coffee plantation in India.
