Abstract

: In the present century, the world has become a global village as a result, tourism has gained significant boost. India holds a large number of natural and cultural resources which can be harnessed to make it a hub of tourism. Slowly adventure tourism is gaining its foothold in India and in the years to come it can be one of the highest sources of earning foreign exchange. Many states of the country hold immense potential for adventure tourism. For instance, the Himalayas attract mountaineers; the Thar dessert in Rajasthan can be used for dirt bike and motor racing activities; the water bodies in the country can be used for jet-ski rides. The work in this regard is under process as many states have identified potential hotspots for adventure tourism development. Although India has been hub for cultural tourism for decades but the scope for adventure tourism has not been fully exploited yet. Annual adventure sports tournaments like the skiing championship in Apharwat Peak in Gulmarg, the India Surf Festival at the beaches of Orrisa etc. are key tourist attractions. The present research paper highlights significance, opportunities and challenges of adventure tourism in Indian scenario.
